This book is a copy of the entries in the account book of arranged passages kept by Richard Elliott (Manuscript Collection, Burton Collection, Detroit Public Library). It gives the name of the person paying for the passage, port of departure, destination, name of passenger and amount paid for ocean or inland passage. It also lists those outbound for New York or Europe. The book contains over five thousand entries, naming over 45 ports of departure and over 125 destinations -- most in Michigan but some in Ohio, Illinois, Ontario and overseas. The ages of the children were often given as well. The majority of the early emigrants were from Ireland. Later emigrants were from Ireland, England, Holland, Scotland, Belgium, Prussia, Poland, France, Bohemia and other countries. The book includes 13 pages explaining emigrant shipping practices of the times and an explanation on how to interpret the text. The book is fully indexed. 194 pp. Softbound. |
