Elmwood Cemetery is the second oldest active cemetery in Detroit. Elmwood opened on 8 Oct. 1846 on 78 acres. The cemetery is located about three blocks from Jefferson Avenue. This cemetery is the burial site of many famous Detroiters including 28 Mayors and other notables such as the Territorial Governor Lewis Cass, geologist Douglass Houghton and General Russell Alger.
